Important changes in the Law for the protection of animals are on the way as the Ministry for Rural Development and Food finally submitted a draft with regulations that aim to protect animals – strays or companion animals. The draft bill foresees no-redeemable penalties for animals abusers and fines up to 30,000 euros. A microchip data base. Ban circuses with animals. The changes come after immense pressure from national and international animal welfare societies and an increasing movement of organized or not organized animal lovers who are fed up seeing mainly dogs and cat to get tortured, hanged, drown, poisoned or shot to death and the culprits mostly go free. The draft Law includes 18 regulations and I try to summarize.
The law will be open to public consultation until April 15, 2011, so, please, make your comments in opengov,gr – but to be political correct in Greek!

Thank you to everyone who chipped in so that (fake) Floppy Ears could be neutered even though the municipality has not yet started a stray control project! This action has saved many unwanted puppies and will ensure that Floppy has a good future in Malia!

Due to the new ‘Kallikratis’ system Malia now falls under the Municipality of Hersonissos. This municipality is a merge of the following villages: Krassi, Malia, Mochos, Stalis (all former municipality Malia) Koutouloufari, Piskopiano, Old Hersonissos, Chersonissos (all former municipality Hersonissos) Anissaras, Analipsi, Gouves, Kato Gouves, Kokkini Hani, Amnissos (former municipality Gouves) and Episkopi (former municipality Episkopi).
There are now many many more citizens in the area as well as more (stray) dogs to deal with by the municipality. Therefore, CAWG and other NGOs contacted the new Mayor (Mr. Doxastakis) to see what we could do to help improve the situation for citizens, tourists & animals.
We have recently had an introductory meeting with the Mayor, 3 other municipal workers, as well as representatives of the animal protection groups in the area, to see what are the best options for this newly formed municipality to deal with this big problem! It was a very positive meeting which showed that the problem is recognized, research in the matter had been done on behalf of the municipality and that there is the will to find a good sustainable solution!
Hopefully more positive news on this soon…

An impression of promoting our work with Marley at the Carnival in Malia…
…but before getting pleasantly distracted by the photos, we would like to use this opportunity to generously thank “γευσεις” (traditional products) Malia, for their generous donation!
